R.A.P. Ferreira - 5 to the Eye with Stars
Ruby Yacht
R.A.P. Ferreira exists in a strange space between hip-hop and hypnotic. Placing a description on his place in the game comes up pointless - it becomes no easier to wrap up the further we get down the line. Each project adding to the enigmatic aura that slowly vibrates off of Ferreira's output. '5 to the Eye with Stars' is a worthy addition to the strange yet strangely familiar discography of the Ruby Yacht native.
R.A.P. Ferreira's puzzling approach to the hip-hop game deals in abstraction. A lingo that requires thought to wrap your psyche around, and even when you come to a conclusion it still feels like there's a space between what you interpret and what it all means - you could look at it as a bit of an analogy for life in general. What does anything mean really? Interpretation and perspective being the defining feature of existence. In an existence void of meaning you have to find your own. Twisting the medium through which we interact with each other - words and ways - opens up ground for rudimentary thoughts. Back to square one, back to basics. Is this all there is? Why can't we play with what we know to create something that we don't? Things worth experiencing wait on the edges of that which we accept. The answers are out there, the comfort zone just has to be pulled from behind you. Place yourself in a space where things flow and move to a different rhythm. Uproot your knowledge of what once was. Switch up the backdrop. Substitute a setting. Things were like that. Now they're like this. There's no turning back.
'No one ever really dies, well no one ever really cared either. They nod as if incredulity makes them wiser.' There's so much to unpack. I'm not going to act as if I understand the majority of it, but there's something incredible going on here.
For those that are looking for something that upsets what they know but still offers enough of a familiar tune to make it a somewhat comfortable new experience, here's what you're searching for. Sit back and let Ferreira's verbiage tap-dance your mental doors. Welcome him in if you wish.
