Spirit of the Beehive - You’ll Have to Lose Something
Saddle Creek
Philadelphia's finest, Spirit of the Beehive, release their full-length follow-up to their 2023 i'm so lucky EP and 2021's incredible fourth studio album Entertainment, Death. You'll Have to Lose Something, Spirit of the Beehive(SotB)'s fifth full length continues the bands lineage of producing sonic worlds that change like the weather. Like traversing a staircase put together by heavily inebriated builders, Spirit of the Beehive construct offset, unlevelled, heaven-and-hell entangled platforms. Different levels of cerebral range and understanding converge to clusterfuck the earholes of those that decide to tune in.
A frenetic mind and restless limbs. Jumping from one beam to another. Over the gap - not bridging it - and around the bend. Holes in memories. Integral pieces of the bigger picture missing. Sinkholes of information. Like sand through your fingers. Sliding on by. Never to be seen or heard from again. Locked in the astral vault. Different periods meet. Worlds collide. Timelines get crossed. The past meets present. Sounds diverge into soup. Lost inside someone else. Caught in the crossfires of desire. Wanting it all but ending up with all, less yourself.
You'll Have to Lose Something flows in and out of consciousness like a slo-mo-yo-yo-ing FM dial; picking up on different aspects of different stations as it glides on by. An opalescent outline contorts around the material. It's here - all here - and by the time you've grasped it, it's moved on, or gone. Into the stratosphere. Onto the next universe. Off on its travels. Away, away.
SotB grasp the unexplainable. They hover on lucid visions, ephemeral realities. Surrealist sights and sounds grip the globe and turn it on its head. All is not as it is meant to be.
