Codex - Avert Chroma
Codex's sophomore album Avert Chroma jumps right back into the heavily sample-filled spheres in which Codex's material has historically lived within. Snipped-up, stripped-down, ripped apart and mechanically mangled back together again, the soundscapes we are allowed to wander around in are of "other" essence. Avert Chroma was in production for three years - May 2022 to March 2025. Codex's Instagram story on 15/3/25 reads: 'Dedicated to Toledo, friends, family, machines and you.'
Through the veil of a manic and somewhat scattered mind comes a work of patience and tantalising care - a highly focused, deeply energised bout of nuts-and-bolts resonance. Harbouring what seems to be a throw-the-kitchen-sink-at-it approach to making music, Codex flexes many a fragmented groove; many a moment of fractured bliss. Like being ground down into mince meat by a cuckoo clock as it rapaciously races through satellite TV, Avert Chroma feeds the maniacal mind. It's restless; needs constant stimulation. Static shocks keep the body alive and upright. Itching inside the brain needs tending to - extended-metallic-q-tips should do the trick. Avert Chroma is like some manic figure tapping their metallic fingers on the inside of your head; undoing screws and playing wicked tricks on your being. Why they have metallic fingers is anybody’s guess, and so is how Avert Chroma was made. It exists outside of comprehension; it boggles the brain. The locks of creativity were certainly picked and pulled apart; the door to the other side was stepped right on through.
Codex's Instagram story on 12/3/25 reads: 'Hype and commerce doesn't make me happy. Sharing beats with my friends does.'
Avert Chroma is of a musique concrète demeanour for the most part, but slips into a more musical stream every now and then. It gets lulled along by a sweet tide of stretching time-and-sonic-space - you could say it comes up for air - before it dives back into the nuts-and-bolts. It's a relatively impossible task to pinpoint where things begin and end. It's a clusterfuck to the aural senses, a complete annihilation to understanding. A never-ending freefall of creative feats, Avert Chroma falls off of, and into, itself at each and every turn. Like a stream which somehow supplies itself with enough water to remain in flow, Avert Chroma is a self-sufficient world of sonic architecture. It's rapaciously discovering things about its being in order to one day consume itself and reach a point of rest, forever - but until that day comes....
Codex has compiled a YouTube playlist of all samples that make up Avert Chroma.
