Tyler, the Creator's soul-infused centrepiece, IGOR, turns 5. The glimpses of maturity shown on Flower Boy come to fruition. T-Funk was now in full effect.
Tyler somewhat sheds the bars and beats, and dips his twinkle toes into shades of a neo-soul aesthetic. To say that Tyler never had something of this quality in him would be a lie. To say that he had something of this quality in him, in this sound and style, would also be a lie. The ability was always there - no doubt. Whether it would be tapped into was always the question at hand. Said question found its answer towards the end of the 2010's and would culminate in IGOR, Tyler's dive in the neo-soul deep end.
Shock rap was a thing of the past; far in the distant dunes. A hushed hum which eventually fell on deaf ears. There was a lot more to pull from the faucet of creative feats. 'Sometimes you gotta close a door to open a window.' Closing a door on the past opens a window to the infinite. Putting to bed former fears so that new life can emerge; so that new life can flourish. Tying up the loose ends and moving the fuck on. Onwards and outwards. Spread the dancing fuel. Sprinkle the hi-hats with magic dust. Unburden the soul of self-induced stasis. A leap of faith may be required.
The real you reveals itself once the surface takes the backseat. Colours which once felt like a dream become the reality. The path becomes more fluid. Feet find their groove. Words find their way.
'Exactly what you run from you end up chasing.'
