MF DOOM - Operation Doomsday

October 19th, 1999.

Daniel Dumile's debut project under the 'MF DOOM' moniker turns 25. Operation Doomsday is the masterful beginnings of Hip-Hop's greatest supervillain. It stands out, and above, almost everything else in Hip-Hop around at the time. It had/has a unique soulful touch amongst obscure humour and comic book excerpts. Worlds are built through the character of DOOM. DOOM's dastardly deeds meet the wicked mind behind their rather complex protagonist.

Fleshed together like wire mesh, lyrics twist and turn to connect. A contortionist on the linguistic front, few can link words like DOOM. A flow like rugged silk, jagged butter; angular but free-flowing, awkward. 'Retarded in real life; on the mic, rain man.' Intent on bending the dictionary around the world and back. Chain-linked abstractions set across an infinite mindscape.

Zev Love X disappears after the death of his brother and fellow KMD member DJ Subroc. When things fall apart they also come together; although things will never be the same. The puzzle pieces together in weird ways. We cling to things knowing that they won't - can't - last. On the other side of said things lies the pain, suffering, of reality. The inescapable twist in the tale. The wake up call. The crack of life's whip. There is life after death. A transformative state. Often times it doesn't begin until it ends; you have to die in order to live. When you meet your fate you either fold or get set free. Turn struggle into strength. The choice is yours.

The birth of DOOM.
