An Interview With: memory card

Alabamian and precocious talent memory card is producing some of the most intimate and well-woven material on the contemporary scene. 

memory card's 'As the Deer' project made its way onto my top 50 albums of 2023. The attention to detail within the music and overarching 'I don't care at all because I care too much' feeling resonated on a large level.

Peter: First off, how are you? How's life going?

memory card: I'm doing alright, I’ve been looking for a power supply for this mic preamp all day, but I can't complain about nothing. 

Peter: How did memory card come about? What would you say is memory card's origin story?

memory card: I'm not really sure how to pinpoint it. The band name came from my first drum machine having a memory card error message every time i turned it on. Which was weird cause it was internal memory issue not like an sd card slot thing; either way i think the whole band/project is probably defined by janky equipment and desperately making sounds out of whatever I can. 

Peter: Having released multiple projects across 2022 and 2023, do you have any output set for 2024?

memory card: I was trying to let myself take a break, but I'm not sure it's possible. There'll probably be some kind of release within the year, but I couldn't tell you what it would be like at all. 

Peter: Do you have any influences that you could speak on? In what ways are these influences influential?

memory card: Emperor X has been a big one for the past year or so, but it's almost impossible to say. I'm just gonna throw a bunch of weird ones out there: Simon Joyner, Voice Actor, Jimmy Tamborello, Steve Reich, Brittle Stars, Julie Doiron, early Flying Lotus, Cody Chesnutt, Drag City in 1996, Todd Rundgren, and most important of all, my friends.

Peter: Is there a music scene in Birmingham? If so, are there defining features/tid-bits that you could tell me about?

memory card: It's a lot of hardcore with some enduring indie and country stuff. I'm not from there i just confuse everyone by putting it as my Bandcamp location thingy. There are some really incredible artists/bands coming out of there though like Taygaloo Cat, Cash Langdon, Trooper, and Jahnah Camille, to name even more names. 

Peter: Your music often emanates a shy feel. Would you say that this is an aesthetic of choice, or something that reflects your inner being?

memory card: There definitely is a kind of weird deflection from something darker or more vulnerable in some songs, but I think I end up showing my ass on every album. I'm just bad at communicating.

Peter: And finally, where do you plan on going with this music thing? Is there a plan?

memory card: I plan to keep playing in bands and producing stuff. I think the big plan is to get these punks to stop calling this shit slacker rock. I don't know i got so many plans. Oh and i'm playing in Oldstar on tour this summer it's gonna be a movie.
