Dungeon Serpent - World of Sorrows EP
Nameless Grave Records
The debut project from Dungeon Serpent - a one man Death Metal band hailing from Vancouver, BC - begins at a bit of a crossroads that most acts find themselves halfway through their career - in between sights, sounds and experimentation’s. It's quite a rare feat to start a few steps ahead of square one, but Arawn of Dungeon Serpent seems to have a strong hold in his own game - a clear vision for what extreme metal can be. Incredibly aggressive, and stunningly beautiful at times, the World of Sorrows EP is fascinating it its ability to tread that fine line so delicately.
Grueling in nature, yet more melodic than the name of the band and project title would lead you to believe, this act defies the confines of a set of rules or regulations. Joining Serpent Column in the left leaning extreme metal scene, and building towards a more open to possibilities approach, Dungeon Serpent has created a project laced with interesting ideas while maintaining solid foundations to fall back on. Stabs of experimentation and scathing, scornful guitar tones are here in abundance. For fans of harsh guitar work you really can't go wrong. It resonates in a way that can't be explained in anyway other than deeply emotional and cathartic.
The instrumentals range from heavenly to downright hellish on the flip of a dime, and this is where the World of Sorrows EP excels. Capricious, and utterly vengeful, the sonic assault awaiting the listener is nothing short of frightening at times - a whirlwind of unadulterated energy and an unforgiving wall of sound await you. Step right in to the sonic equivalent of sandpaper travelling ear to ear at a blistering pace.
Dungeon Serpent is an act to keep a firm eye on, for sure.
